I removed mine last weekend, and man did the torque increase.īut then I installed a tuned set of straight pipes w/baffles too. The new EFI sporties have a scavenge pipe underneath the rear muffler.ĭoes the same job as the cross over pipe on the older machines So I have to say this was good move, after removing the stock mufflers a couple of years ago and the recent removal of the 'balance tube'.

You can cruise with a light throttle and a nice burble comes out or you can crack the throttle and it has a very sharp bark to it.īoth plugs now look a bit more like each other than before, so the mixture seems more balanced between the cylinders too. Going to a well made two into one system and dropping that weird balance tube thingy seems to have improved the idle and the warm up of the machine in these cooler temps and it does feel like there is an improvement in mid range, not to mention a sweet exhaust note. :Dīased on my experience the funny looking 'balance tube' that connects the two mufflers on a 2005 XL1200, seems to have been designed to allow some exhaust pressure relief because the front pipe muffler had a catalytic converter in it.Īfter installing V&H slip-ons that restriction disappeared but it introduced some weird resonances in the exhaust system. I have found that some people get a "seat of the pants" increase through their ears. If you have removed it for aesthetics and don't mind giving up a little power, which you may or may not notice by the seat of your pants, then you're good, at least as far as the crossover is concerned. If you removed ths tube for performance reasons than you have gone in the wrong direction. However, removing it will affect performance in a small but negative way just as George Crim suggested. Also, removing the crossover/balance tube doesn't make your bike act like it has drag pipes as someone has suggested earlier in this thread. It also smooths out the exhausts sound just a bit and perhaps the vibration as George Crim suggested in his earlier post. Triumph first used it on their 1969 models after they discovered that it gave a slight increase in power. The balance tube is there for performance reasons. For instance one cannot always feel a small power difference which will show on the dyno, but the difference is still there. What one "feels" regarding small power differences is subjective and needs to be discounted due to the presence of proven testing.
